Physical activity and land use planning

A safe and appealing environment is a more attracting place for people of all ages to be physically active. This page presents background information, recommendations for planning and good examples of successful projects. It is advisable to take the circumstances for physical activity, among all other aspects, into consideration, as walking, cycling, spontaneous sports and hiking, when initiatives for new land use planning projects are being launched.

An environment which provides good opportunities for physical activity in our everyday lives encourages people of all ages to exercise more in their neighbourhood. This has great significance on maintaining and improving our general health.

Research in the field of physical activity combined with land use planning has been carried out at the department of architecture at the University of Oulu, Finland, since the year 2004. The research is being financed by the Ministry of Education and Culture and Finlands environmental administration.
